ThinkWell is seeking a mixed-methods researcher to support ThinkWell's Research and Evaluation portfolio in Mozambique. The incumbent will conceptualize, design, supervise and deliver upon ongoing research projects and carry out M&E activities across various projects.



Examples of relevant research projects undertaken by ThinkWell in the past include:

  • A nation-wide time and motion study of primary health care workers in Mozambique
  • A quantitative retrospective impact evaluation of a performance-based financing project in sub-Saharan Africa
  • A qualitative study assessing the impact of RBF on provider motivation and on overall health systems’ building blocks


  • Conceptualize and draft research protocols using state-of-the art quantitative and qualitative research methods to ensure quality data-generation and rigorous analysis and prepare documentation for IRB’s submission.
  • Design, organize, and carry out operational research activities—including reality checks—to assess the impact of pilot and scaled-up interventions in the Maputo, Gaza, and Zambesia provinces.
  • Collaborate with ThinkWell staff and other relevant stakeholders to ensure translation of the operational research into communication-oriented lessons learned using data visualization and compelling narratives.
  • Design and implement a monitoring and evaluation strategy to capture real-time insights and lessons learned and share them with project partners.
  • Perform additional research work as required, including data collection and analysis, and draft research manuscript.
  • Actively seek opportunities for publication and prepare all the relevant documentation.
  • Ensure effective and timely dissemination of research outcomes to key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate effectively with regular and contracted research staff on projects.
  • Collaborate effectively with various partners and donors within existing projects and in the view of seeking additional funding for ThinkWell's desired research projects to build the portfolio.


  • Master’s degree in Public Health or in a relevant subject and minimum 5 years of full-time work experience; alternatively, 7 years of full-time work experience and relevant publications are accepted
  • Good knowledge of social and behavior change (SBC) research methodologies and of human centered design (HCD) preferred
  • Strong network in the health systems and policy researcher community preferred
  • Familiarity with data visualization techniques preferred
  • Fluent in written English 
  • Fluency of Portuguese is an asset
